Monday, February 15, 2010 – The development of public speaking skills for law enforcers may not seem an obvious component of the training provided at the Police Training Academy, but the fruits of such training were put on public display last Friday night at the Police Auditorium.
Head of the Police Training School Inspector Claude Amedee, said the academy was able to overcome challenges to host its first debate night for recruits.
Four police recruits from “Course 30” debated the topic “In policing difficult communities, police excesses are sometimes necessary and therefore should be excused”.
“This activity tonight forms part of our training programme for our recruits. About one year ago, after the training programme was reviewed we found it appropriate to have included debating and impromptu speaking and with the assistance of Monroe College, we were able to fit this particular into out Language and Communication Module.
At the conclusion of the evening, very few points separated the debating sides which comprised the proposers Mark Joseph and Livingston Norville and the eventual winners, the opposers: Sidney Joseph and Justin Prospere. |
