Wednesday, February 24, 2010 – Monroe College, an institution of tertiary education for Saint Lucians and non- nationals, will this week contribute to the ongoing discourse on crime in Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean.
Dean of Monroe College Saint Lucia Campus, Ramesh Sinnanan, who will present the lecture this year, says from the inception, the college planned to host an annual “Independence Lecture Series”.
“We have been in Saint Lucia for 3 years and we have chosen to have a lecture every year since we came to Saint Lucia. This year the lecture will focus will be titled 'Towards A Caribbean Criminology'.”
Mr. Sinnanan says, there has been a tendency in the region for authorities to tackle crime using models adapted from outside the region. He says this approach will be fully explored during the presentation with a view to finding solutions.
“Caribbean criminology is what we feel what is needed in the region—a study of criminology and crime from a specific Caribbean perspective. Caribbean criminology unlike traditional criminology is grounded in the bedrock rock of conditions that are particular to our region,” Sinnanan said
The Monroe College official says the lecture presentation which will be held under the patronage of Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy at the National Cultural Centre from 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010. |
