Monday, February 8, 2010 – The Ministry of Home Affairs and National Security and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, through a collaborative effort, convened a Commissioners Parade and Long Service Awards Ceremony last Sunday.
The Long Service Award was bestowed upon police officers who served Saint Lucia for 25 to 30 years.
Commissioner of Police, Ausbert Regis, says it was necessary to acknowledge his officers' great service at a time when the police force has come under great scrutiny.
In describing the event as bittersweet, Regis says he believes the future of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is well placed, as authorities have spared no effort in the screening and professional training of new police recruits.
“Twenty-five years in anything is a long time. To achieve 25 years as a police officer is a tremendous milestone. 25 years in the Royal Saint Lucia Police force is equivalent to 75 years in ordinary service because of all the hard work, the frustration, the misery, everything that you have to put up with; but we are here and we are not going anywhere yet,” Regis said.
Speaking to potential officers who also attended the event, minister for national security, Senator Guy Mayers, says new recruits will be expected to work with government's new crime prevention strategies in order to bring about a level of stability to the island.
“You will soon be out of the Academy and you will take your place among the ranks of men and women who have given so many years of dedicated service. I hope that the length of time they have served and the sacrifices they've made will be an example to you. Let us continue the good work, let us continue to keep Saint Lucia safe.”
