Tuesday, February 9, 2010 – The government of Saint Lucia continues to make good on its plan to address crime related issues on the island.

Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Senator Guy Mayers, says he has recently brought several governmental, social and religious agencies together to forge the way forward, through a coordinated effort, to implementing the national crime prevention strategy.

Minister Mayers says government will continue to pump resources into social institutions to nip traits of criminal activity at the bud.

“Throwing physical resources at the problem is not necessarily going to solve the problem. We have to take a multi-faceted approach to the whole issue of managing crime and ensuring that the country is safe. Dealing with the family issues is one such approach. Given that the family is the nucleus of the society we must attempt to deal with matters that commence at the home.”

Minister Mayers has also called on the country's religious groups to join forces with other agencies as he says, “Saint Lucia is experiencing a deep spiritual problem.”

“Things like anger management, our civic duties, respect for authority, respect for law and order; these seem to have fallen by the wayside. Our fear of God, fear of inculcating our moral values in our young people, a lot of these things are lacking,” the minister said.

Minister Mayers says dialogue among the social partners must continue.
