Thursday, February 25, 2010 Sports minister, Honourable Lenard Montoute, said the current dry spell is hindering efforts to upgrade and maintain sporting facilities. Mr. Montoute made the remarks while delivering an address at the 2009/2010 National Sports Awards, last Saturday.

“This situation is presenting a challenge in terms of getting desired results in improving surfaces, as well as in the use of limited resources; but is has not been entirely a horror story. We overcame many of our challenges of the past year and scored our fair share of successes as well.  A crowning moment of the last year was the very successful hosting of the CARIFTA games at the George Odlum National Stadium.”

Another area of concern has been the George Odlum National Stadium, which now serves as a temporary home for the burnt down St. Jude Hospital. Mr. Montoute said dialogue is ongoing with health authorities and the St. Jude’s task force in ensuring that all is done to rebuild St. Jude and to reinstate the stadium as a full fledged sports facility.

Meantime, the sports minister said efforts are being made to develop sports programmes on the island to take advantage of the wide array of infrastructural investments.

“With greater independence, responsibility, and leadership at the community level, I envisage an upsurge in domestic sports and a mushrooming of the 'Sports for All' initiative, the minister said.

“We are currently fashioning a remodelling of the 'Elite Athletes Programme’ to make it more targeted and more tapered to cater more for the truly elite—the cream of the crop—who require added support to make that breakthrough to the very pinnacle of sports achievements.”

Mr. Montoute said the governments of Taiwan and Cuba through their embassies must be commended for their contributions towards the development of sports in Saint Lucia.
