Monday, February 15, 2010  The achievements and challenges of the Boys Training Centre (BTC) will be highlighted as part of a milestone celebration during the month of February.

The BTC  which is Saint Lucia's only juvenile detention facility, will mark its  fiftieth anniversary  on the 20th of February.

Newly appointed director of the Centre, Mr. Lenard Terrance,  says one of the main aims for the anniversary year  is to implement a formal educational programme at the institution.

Mr Terrance made the comments Monday morning, as a guest on Radio Saint Lucia's “The Agenda”.

“It is very important that the Boys Training Centre has its own education programme to address the academic needs of the wards and we are really pushing for this right now; the aim is to have the boys educated in English, mathematics, social studies and a variety of other subjects. This will ensure that they are not disadvantaged even though they attended the Centre; we want to ensure that this is implemented before year end,” Terrance said.

Mr. Terrance is also urging citizens to support and participate in a week of activities which has been organised for the Centre's anniversary.

He also underscored the need for the business community and society at large to support the institution's programmes, which are designed for the development  and rehabilitation of the wards.

“We are going to look at each of our programmes and attempt to involve the business sector and the wider society to participate in each of those initiatives like our skills programmes, agriculture and motor mechanics programmes. So after our anniversary we will be knocking on the doors of many business people to encourage them to assist with our programmes.”

The Boys Training Centre began its anniversary celebrations on Monday afternoon, with the staging of its first ever sports meet.

On Wednesday, the Gros- Islet court house will also receive a facelift from the staff and wards of the Centre as part of their  community outreach efforts.
