Thursday 21 October 2010  The Electoral Department has announced a temporary measure for obtaining National Identification Cards.  Commencing immediately, the department will be accepting Baptismal Certificates as bona fide documents  to process new ID cards. Civic and Voter Coordinator, Olimphia Lionel, explains the rationale for the decision taken by the Electoral Commission in collaboration with the management of the Electoral Department.

This decision was taken as a result of countless complaints by members of the general public in obtaining birth certificates from the Civil Status Registry.  However, it must be noted that this ID will only be valid for one year. The department hopes that during that time, persons would make every effort to obtain their birth certificates.

Following the one year expiration date of the identification cards issued,  persons will need to obtain the new Birth Certificates in order to have their national identification cards renewed.
