Thursday 11 November 2010  The Ministry of Education and Culture, following a very important meeting with key stakeholders, expects to make an official announcement on the reopening of  schools today, Friday November 12.

All schools have been closed since the passage of Hurricane Tomas which dumped piles of mud, water and debris onto the schools’ compound.

Since the hurricane some of the institutions have also been serving as emergency shelters.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr Rufina Frederick, says all stakeholders in the education system have been strategising to get the nation’s youth back in their classes at the soonest.

“The Ministry of Education and Culture has held two separate meeting to plan for the reopening of school. On Thursday November 11 our first meeting was with the executive of the Saint Lucia Teachers Union. The second was with the executive of the National Principals’ Association In addition, the Ministry of Education and Culture has scheduled a  general meeting for all education officers, principals and vice principals from primary and secondary schools as well as all our school counsellors. The meeting is schedule for Friday November 12 from 10AM at the NIC conference room. At this meeting we are hoping to get full participation and decisive action will be taken.”

Various technical teams from the Ministry of Education and Culture have been working tirelessly alongside private contractors to clean the various schools in preparation for the resumption of classes.

The permanent secretary says the clean-up teams have done a considerable amount of work thus far.

“Our efforts to clean the schools have been very successful thus far and we are hoping that in the next few weeks the education system will be back to normalcy.”

Parents and guardians of children attending school are advised to listen to GIS bulletins for updates on the reopening of the nation’s schools.
