Monday 29 November 2010 – The Ministry of Education and Culture, following the water challenges posed after the passage of Hurricane Tomas is moving to augment the water storage capacity for all schools on the island. That’s the word from Deputy Chief Education Officer responsible for Planning Mr. Marcus Edward.
“All schools on the island could boast of having some measure of water storage capacity and ranging from maybe 800 gallons to almost sometimes 5,000 gallons for secondary schools. However, we recently received a donation of 200 tanks; each tank has a capacity to store 1,000 gallons and we are making those tanks available to the schools to further augment the capacity in every school by a 1,000 gallons.”
The ministry is calling on members of the public to desist immediately from vandalising water tanks belonging to schools, in an attempt to illegally extract water.
“It is quite an expense to the ministry at this point in getting water to the schools. We have been assisted by WASCO in this regard in several locations but in many instances the ministry has had to engage private truckers to take water to the schools; this comes at a significant cost,” Edward said.
Ministry officials are appealing to the public to refrain from any acts of vandalism to school property.
