Wednesday 17 November 2010 – Citizens—diabetic or not—should as a way of life adopt a healthy lifestyle; that’s the message coming from the Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association, as the association launched several activities to coincide with World Diabetes Day.
The United Nation Sanctioned day is November 14 where countries around the world organize activities to sensitize persons to the disease.
According to Co-Chair of the Diabetes Awareness Month Planning committee, Claudine Mathurin, “despite the disruption to the country due to the passage of Hurricane Tomas Saint Lucia was still able to organize activities to mark the annually observance.”
Apart from the official opening ceremony, a mini fair was held at the Victoria Hospital.
The Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association, a non governmental organization, works alongside the Ministry of Health in assisting diabetics and their families cope with the disease.
This year’s activities were organized jointly with the Lions Club and the Ministry of Health under the theme “Education and prevention - taking control of diabetes”.
