Wednesday, October 13, 2010 – The Government and people of Cuba have appointed a new Ambassador to Saint Lucia.
Her Excellency Mrs Lydia Gonzalez Navarro presented he credentials to the island`s Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy Tuesday morning at government house.
The new Ambassador says the diplomatic relationship which exists between Cuba and Saint Lucia will continue to present mutual benefits for both countries and the wider Caribbean.
“We Cubans are very proud of our Caribbean roots and as well, of our friendly relationship with the nations of our region—nations with whom we share not only the Caribbean warm waters but also our dramatic history. Cuba confirms its goodwill to strengthen its collaboration with the people and government of Saint Lucia based on our deep respect on the path chosen and undertaken by both our countries fully aware that united we will prevail.”
In welcoming the new Cuban diplomat, the Governor General thanked the government and people of Cuba for the level of support provided to Saint Lucia in various fields including education, agriculture and healthcare.
Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy also reaffirmed Saint Lucia`s commitment to its diplomatic relations with Cuba.
“Over the past thirty years, our two countries have maintained a very rewarding relationship. We continue to support Cuba in the international arena and look forward to the day when the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on your country and its people will end. We have been beneficiaries of the high level of technical and financial assistance which we continue to receive from Cuba in the fields of education, agriculture, health and technology. We look forward to exploring the strategies and mechanisms which will facilitate the strengthening of these areas of cooperation.” In a true reflection of the diplomatic relationship which exists between the two countries, Saint Lucia`s Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King recently called on the United Nations to urgently review the long-standing United States embargo on Cuba.
