Tuesday 23 November 2010 The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) is calling on the public to rekindle interest and participation in the lantern festival. The lantern festival is an annual national event of the island's cultural calendar.

Cultural Field Officer  of  the CDF, Tyrone Harris, says in an effort to strengthen the art form's sustainability, the CDF  will host a free lantern   building  workshop on Saturday, November, 27 at the National Cultural Centre  from 10:00 am.

“In terms of the trend for the participation in the lantern competition, we have noticed over the years that there has been a dip in participation where the community, individuals and organizations are concerned. The schools play an integral role in the lantern competition and have always been carrying the mantle of the lantern competition. However, this year because of the passage of Hurricane Tomas and the fact that schools have been closed it's proving a bit difficult.”

Meantime the CDF calls on the public to register early for participation in the official lantern competition.

“We've just started the registration process and we are hoping that persons can come to the CDF office to obtain their registration and criteria. If persons could call in or provide an e-mail address, we will make that medium available for providing them the registration forms and criteria”.

The lantern festival is scheduled for Saturday, December 4, from 10 a.m. at the National Cultural Centre.
