CDB to assist with rehabilitation of schools

Tuesday 23 November 2010 – The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) will provide assistance to the Government of Saint Lucia to conduct major upgrades of several school plants on the island under the Basic Education Enhancement Project.
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King says the project will provide much needed financing to support the recovery of the education sector.
“We have only recently had discussion with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and I have requested them to expedite the programme—that is the Basic Education Enhancement Project—which has already been approved and received the blessing of the Parliament. I have also requested that they examine the potential of expanding the scope of the project not just to address the problems of schools which we have already identified for major rehabilitation and enhancement, but to look at additional schools which have been affected by the hurricane.”
In response to the destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas the Ministry of Education and Culture is conceptualising an “Adopt a School Programme”.
The prime minister says the programme will encourage private sector partners and friendly agencies to support a school which was devastated.
“The Ministry of Education in response will soon launch a programme called “Adopt A School” having identified the critical needs of the various schools as a consequence of the passage of the hurricane with the hope of attracting interested agencies, governments, and other institutions to identify a school and to adopt that school by means of providing assistance to the particular institution.”
The prime minister says initial assessments indicate that the education sector would require in the vicinity of $EC7 million to return to normalcy.
