CARICOM delegation visits Saint Lucia in the aftermath of hurricane Tomas

Tuesday 23 November 2010 – CARICOM has vowed to support the Government and people of Saint Lucia in whatever way possible as the country continues to recover from the impact of Hurricane Tomas.
That message was delivered by Chairman of the regional grouping His Excellency Dr Edwin Carrington who led a delegation to Saint Lucia on Tuesday.
“If there is anything that we can do we are going to give it the best shot. There are reports of assistance Saint Lucia may have received from some CARICOM member states. We will be happy to get a report or perception of what sort of assistance the region has provided thus far. Indeed, what we will craft as the CARICOM Secretariat to put to the member states will be influenced by what they have provided so far.”
During the one day visit the CARICOM Chairman held discussions with Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King, who for his part, welcomed the visiting CARICOM delegation in the spirit of Caribbean unity.
“Your visit signifies the importance that CARICOM plays in the whole regional integration process and the cohesiveness that it brings to regional unity. Your visit is timely. As Secretary General, you can undertake the role of coordinator and facilitator in attempting to galvanise the regional support to bring about the level of assistance that we will need in the process of reconstruction”.
Whilst on island, Dr. Carrington profited the opportunity to visit the town of Soufriere to assess the destruction first hand. So far, a number of CARICOM states including Dominica, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago have assisted Saint Lucia with its recovery efforts.
