Friday, April 16, 2010 – Saint Lucia is poised to benefit from massive exposure when the island participates in Expo Shanghai 2010.
The main organizer—the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs—is of the view that by the time October 2010 rolls around, the island would have captured the imagination of many investors and potential tourists.
Staff of the ministry is now gearing for the six-month exposition which starts on the 1st of May, in China. The international trade event is expected to attract the participation of two hundred countries.
Saint Lucia will join CARICOM counterparts in a joint Caribbean community pavilion, and will boast its own distinctly characterized booth, that will feature the products and services of small and medium businesses here.
Saint Lucia’s booth, designed by Adrian Augier, was unveiled at the ministry recently. The booth concept, Augier says, will reflect the theme.
“The key words there are “life in the city” and we were expected to interpret the city as the backdrop against which people live, experience life, and interact. Our approach to that—not being a huge metropolitan centre—is to try to showcase the island as a city with all of its characteristics, little neighbourhoods and uniqueness.”
Permanent secretary in the ministry of commerce, Marie-Ange Leonard, says the ministry is hoping to accomplish several objectives.
“Saint Lucia, like other member states, considers its participation in this international exposition as a significant opportunity to accomplish the following objectives: to expose the rich culture, history and main economic sectors of Saint Lucia to an international audience, to facilitate the exposure of firms which are export ready and wish to offer their goods and services to an international market and, to promote Saint Lucia as an attractive destination.”
The theme for Expo Shangai is “Better City, Better Life”. |
