Monday, April 12, 2010 – With less than twenty days to go before the tournament bowls off, Sports Minister Honourable Lenard Montoute says, the infrastructure requirements are in place for the successful hosting of the ICC 20/20 World Cup Matches in Saint Lucia.
Minister Montoute says preparation plans included major upgrades to the Beausejour Cricket Ground and two practice venues namely the Mindoo Philip Park, and the Gros-Islet playing field.
He provided the update on Saint Lucia's preparation for the games in an exclusive interview with the GIS.
“We are right on schedule with our preparations. We had to carry out extensive repairs to the Beausejour Cricket Ground which was deteriorating rapidly. The roof, some railings and ground works had to be dealt with. We also brought in some new equipment which will be needed by the ground staff and maintenance crew during the games,” the minister said. “Despite the drought, we are doing very well with the grassing of the Gros-Islet field and the Mindoo Philip Park. During the last site visit, we received the flying colours we were aiming for in terms of satisfaction on the part of the organisers. We are up-to-date and on schedule. We have provided the facilities expected and at the required standards.”
Minister Montoute is also encouraging Saint Lucians to purchase tickets for the games.
He says despite the low sale of match tickets thus far, he is confident that Saint Lucia's hosting will be a success.
“The nature of the 20/20 game very exciting and action oriented. I know that it will be an attraction to our locals. It’s just that culturally Saint Lucians don't secure tickets in advance and I can only imagine the last minute rush, but I want to encourage citizens who have not yet purchased tickets to avoid the rush and get their tickets as soon as possible. Notwithstanding, I have no doubt that the matches which we will host will be sold out and that once again Saint Lucia will be distinguished as a worthy host and as a venue of the highest calibre.”
Saint Lucia is scheduled to host first round matches where defending champions Pakistan, will battle against Bangladesh.
Super 8 matches and a semi-final match will also be played at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.
The cost of match tickets range from US$10, to $US40. |
