Thursday, April 15, 2010 – The 2010 Jazz Fringe Program promises a mix of high calibre home-grown talent and internationally reputed names who will set the stage for a typically diverse and musically captivating Jazz experience. As the Saint Lucia Tourist Board works with Fringe Venue Partners to daub the final touches on for 19th birthday celebration of Saint Lucia Jazz, the news from the Fringe is a go for all venues and then some. Jazz from the Fringe includes Soufriere Jazz, Jazz in the South, Jazz on the Grill, Jazz on the Square, Jazz on the Water’s Edge, Jazz on the Pier, Jazz on the Green and Tea Time Jazz at La Place Carenage.
The schedule of events runs from April 30 to May 7 and consists of both free and ticketed shows held day and night all over the island.
Having given the world a foretaste of the Saint Lucia’s definitive signature – the majestic Pitons, as the dramatic backdrop to the finale of the 2009 Bachelor Series, Soufriere appropriately sounds the first note of the Festival. Set for the Soufriere mini Stadium on April 30th, and consistent with its strong heritage vibe, the Soufriere Jazz line-up is a variation on the heritage theme with St. Lucia School of Music Presenting Black Antz, Phaze, Grammacks, Meshach and Future Lights.
Sunday May 2nd Jazz fans will be treated to a free event at the Rudy John Beach Park in Laborie. Tunes from St. Lucian groups - Wendell Richard’s Quartet and Tropix, the Ivory Coasts’ Dobet Gnahoré and Martinique’s Bamboolaz will enthrall lovers of world music.
Top highlights of the week include Cameron Pierre Trio (of Dominica and United Kingdom) as well as Mushy Widmaier (of Haiti) who are scheduled to perform at Vieux-Fort’s Coconut Bay Resort and Spa on Monday May 3rd. Also scheduled to perform at Coconut Bay the following day are Saint Lucia’s Klewe and Guadeloupe’s Iguane Xtet.
With an assortment of wonders - natural and musical, a blending of the two within Sulphur Springs Park promises to be a unique experience scheduled for Saturday May 1st. The show features Claudette Adjohda, Grammacks, Mystic and the extensively travelled timba wonder Klimax thereby giving visitors in the audience the opportunity to sample the natural island beauty with a dash of Latin spice. On Tuesday May 4th Jazz on the Pier at Pointe Seraphine remains true to its wholesome Saint Lucian brand. This year’s lineup includes our most celebrated proponents of calypso, soca and contemporary music in the persons of De Invader, the Mighty Pep, Ricky T and Nicole David – and Red Clay.
On May 5th La Place Carenage will be abuzz with Tea Time Jazz featuring The G.F Quartet, Shantel Joseph and Zionomi. Later that evening Kendel Hippolyte and Roger Raspail together with JATT All Stars Ensemble from Trinidad and Tobago will command the evenings show at Coconut Bay Resort and Spa.
Jazz on the Water’s Edge will be held at The Edge Restaurant at Rodney Bay and will feature Barbara Cadet on May 4th and Rob “Zi” Taylor on May 6th. Ronald Boo Hinkson (and Friends) is on May 5th at Jazz on the Grill in Rodney Bay, no doubt with the fresh new hit single “User Friendly”. In similar fashion with Main Stage Jazz, The Fringe looks good this year with a fine mix of the genres, representing the best of Saint Lucia, the Caribbean and the World, and an equal share of the stage between music originating from the island and chart topping names in the global market.
