Friday, April 30, 2010 Minister responsible for the Public Service, Honourable Lenard Montoute, has underscored the importance of undertaking critical reviews of Public Service Commissions across the region.

Minister Montoute says this is necessary in order to fashion a suitable 21st century model of Public Service.

He made the point at the opening ceremony for the “Second Regional Conference for Caribbean Public Service Commissions”, which ended in Saint Lucia last week.

Minister Montoute says the modernisation of the public sectors must be pursued as a priority to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency.

“If the Public Service is to play a vital role in achieving and maintaining national competitiveness, it must be equipped with appropriate management structures to enable it to deal with various challenges. Public Service Commissions are often neglected in important discussions being undertaken on public sector transformation, but given the critical role of Public Service Commissions in human resource management, it is important to engage them directly in discussions on Public Service transformation and modernisation.”

The “Second Regional Conference for Caribbean Public Service Commissions” was held under the theme “Public Service Commission: Their Evolving Role in Public Sector Transformation.”

The conference was a collaborative effort between the Caribbean Centre for Development Administration, and the World Bank.
