Tuesday, April 6, 2010 President of the Saint Lucia Pig Farmers Association, Horrace Walters, has called for the strengthening of the cooperatives sector. He lamented that there are members of the various cooperatives who are not educated on the principles and practices of the cooperatives.

“One of the things I find is that people do not understand what the cooperative is all about. They do not know anymore, because we have new people coming in.  We have people who have put their money into this without even knowing. They just want to be part of this. So we just want to see a strengthening of the cooperatives department.”

Mr. Walters has called on the prime minister who is the minister for cooperatives, to undertake the necessary measures to bring the cooperative department back to the dynamic entity that it once was, looking after the interest of the small people.

He says Saint Lucian producers have a deep interest in food security.
