Wednesday, April 28, 2010 – The government of Saint Lucia has appointed a new Public Service Commission-PSC, which is being chaired by Mr Egbert Lionel.
Mr Lionel who is a career public servant has held several senior positions in Saint Lucia's public service.
He has served as permanent secretary in four different ministries including the ministries of legal affairs, home affairs, and labour.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the GIS, Mr Lionel says he is confident that he can have a positive impact on the public service, and has vowed to operate with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
“I have been out of the public service for about eight to nine years now but I have a lot of knowledge ad a clear understanding of what obtains in the public service. Respect for what you are doing is also very important and therefore I would like to fashion people's minds in that regard.”
The PSC’s chairman says he is also eager to hold discussions with regional counterparts on issues relating to the proper operations and functioning of the public service commissions.
Mr. Lionel says his history and experience in the public service will positively impact the PSC, stating that as chairman, he will ensure that the Commission is effective and efficient.
“As chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC), initially my main role is to ensure the proper dispensation of people in the public service, to respond to requests from the ministry of the public service for appointments, promotions and staff movement and to bring a certain level of respects and a dignified ways of doing things.”
Mr. Lionel says his appointment as chairman of the PSC should be viewed as an injection of new blood and a new vision for the Public Service Commission.
