Tuesday, April 13, 2010 – The 81st group of Peace Corps Volunteers were on Monday, formally sworn in to their two-year assignments of service, in Saint Lucia.
Associate Peace Corps Director Sharmon Jules, confirmed the readiness of the participants to adapt to the local culture as well as assume their duties with various government ministries and agencies.
“The training was critical for preparing them and teaching them how to adapt their experience and their knowledge to the cultural context within which they will work over the next two years. They were trained in areas such as cultural appreciation, the Kweyol language, and understanding of our education system, the youth, the environment and the organizational culture in Saint Lucia.”
The seven volunteers have been assigned to the ministry of education and the ministry of social transformation. Other agencies that will also benefit from the voluntarism of the seven Americans include the National Council of and for Older Persons, the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation and the Belle-Vue Farmers’ Cooperative.
“As we witness and celebrate the swearing in ceremony of a new group of Peace Corps volunteers, it is most opportune and necessary to say thanks to those who have preceded this group,” Miss Jules said.
Peace Corp volunteers have been in operation in Saint Lucia for some 49 years. |
