Friday, April 30, 2010 Minister for Tourism Honourable Allen Chastanet has been explaining that increased airlift activity at the Hewanorra International Airport has brought into sharp focus the limited capacity of the airport.

The minister indicated that last year over 400,000 passengers used Hewanorra Airport and that trend is likely to remain and even increase.

“Market intelligence suggests that American eagle is not coming back into Puerto Rico and therefore the continued expansion of our airlift is going to continue to into Hewanorra Airport. We've now seen American Airlines go to double daily flights, we've seen delta go to double daily flights, and we now have JetBlue up to five flights a week and Air Canada coming to Saint Lucia literally on a daily basis with British Airways going to five flights. We're now starting to see that capacity coming in on a daily basis at the Hewanorra airport and the constraints are now starting to grow.”

Minister Chastanet emphasized that in light of the heightened traffic experienced   at the island's main airport, it is now timely and paramount that government seriously addresses upgrading the airport via a redevelopment project.
