Wednesday, April 7, 2010 – The ministry of health and supporting agencies, held a successful day-long health exposition at the William Peter Boulevard yesterday, in observance of World Health Day. The initiative held under the global theme, “Urbanization and Health”, was designed to provide the public with hands-on information and resources to best care for their health.
Minister for Urban Renewal and the Environment, Honourable Richard Frederick, in launching the Health Expo 2010, said the focus of the theme captures the inherent problem that cities the world-over face, as a result of urbanisation.
“Most, if not all cities, face the fundamental task of sheltering persons from the rural areas who turn to internal migration as the most obvious and hassle-free means of making economic advancement whilst working in their country. Not only is over-population the result of this, but it also brings with it the societal ills such as the setting- up of makeshift communities intended to lend shelter to those who do not hail from these areas.”
Minister Frederick has pledged the commitment of the ministry of urban renewal and the environment to work with the ministry of health and other institutions to effectively manage the effects of urbanisation in Saint Lucia.
World Health Day is observed annually on the 7th of April. |
