Friday, April 23, 2010 Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Guy Joseph says under his watch Saint Lucian tax payers will receive value for money on all road development projects which are implemented by his Ministry.

Minister Joseph says apart from demanding quality works from all contractors, ensuring that road development projects are completed on time and within budget is also a major priority.

Minister Joseph addressed the issue during his pretension to the budget debate.

“Madame Speaker I intend to so something that I haven't seen done in this country before and that is to charge the contractor for every day that a project is incomplete.”

Meanwhile minister Joseph has expressed disappointment in the quality and pace of works on road works between Micoud and Desruisseaux.

He says as minister responsible for road works, he assumes full responsibility for the delays and inconveniences to the public.

He has vowed to rectify the problem and ensure the completion of the project at the soonest.

“I want this honourable House to hold me accountable for what is happening on the east coast road, because people who come into our country and secure contracts for projects must be held accountable. These people who sign contracts and make certain promises must note that we will not settle for something different; you must deliver what you promised and that is what this government will demand.”

For the 2010/2011 financial year EC$84.8 million, have been assigned to the Ministry for Communications and Works. Of that amount, EC$48.1 million have been earmarked for various road infrastructure projects.
