Wednesday 6 October 2010  The artistic and cultural community  of Saint Lucia, still reeling from the loss of several of its activists, has once again received the sad news of the passing of Music Specialist  in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mrs. Petronilla Deterville.

Executive Director  of the Cultural Development Foundation, Kennedy 'Boots' Samuel, in paying tribute to Mrs. Deterville, said  her loss is a major setback, particularly in regard to  the projects in which she was directly engaged.

“Once again our cultural family and our national community has been rocked by the news of the passing of another creative and influential cultural leader in Saint Lucia Mrs. Petronilla Deterville. It is another serious blow to our communities and our people.”

Mr. Samuel  also  expressed  sympathy to the Cecilian Rays at the loss of  the founder and director  of the outstanding   Anse La Raye chorale. He said Mrs. Petronilla Deterville  provided  dynamic leadership to the choir which earned  distinction  for its sweet renditions of folk music.

“I think in particular it is a very serious body blow for the community of Anse La Raye and its rich musical tradition. It is one of the most  culturally rich musical communities in Saint Lucia  and the community of Anse La Raye is known for its musical heritage. Mrs. Deterville's presence in that community was like a medium for the passing on of the traditions across the generations.”

Meanwhile, the  Folk  Research Centre is also expressing sadness at  the passing of Mrs. Deterville.

Information Manager at the FRC,  Mr. John Robert Lee, described her as a cultural heroine.
