Friday, October 8, 2010 –  Member of Parliament for Dennery North, Honourable Marcus Nicholas says the agriculture sector within his constituency was severely affected by last week’s inclement weather.

Several farmers are now assessing the damage to their crops and livelihoods in the aftermath of landslides and torrential rains.

However, Honourable Nicholas is confident that the Ministry of Agriculture, which has already begun to asses the destruction, will come to the aid of the affected farmers.

“Agriculture was hard hit and while people may see that many tress did not fall but for plantation on flat lands the mud and the debris definitely destroyed about seventy percent of the crops. I believe that the Ministry of Agriculture will recognise that in their assessment, the agricultural and farm roads were also badly damaged and even though in some areas the damage may not be visible these roads were undermined by the bad weather.”

The Dennery North MP says he is personally saddened by the many families who lost their property and personal belongings as a result of the flooding.

Fortunately no lives were lost.  According to Mr Nicholas he is working closely with central government and all affiliated agencies to provide for the immediate needs of the affected residents.

“As the Parliamentary Representative for Dennery North, I am doing my best to ensure that the various agencies are visible in the community and that matters of health of the residents are taken care of and infrastructural assessments are being undertaken. I am also ensuring that potable water is available to the residents and that residents who lost their stoves and other household  appliances get an adequate supply of  food.”

The Dennery North MP says the government will continue to provide assistance until the community returns to normalcy.”
