Monday, September 21, 2009 – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King says government has already raised One Million Dollars towards the Saint Jude's Hospital Restoration Fund.
The Prime Minister made the disclosure after receiving a donation of a quarter of a million dollars from the LUCELEC Trust Company. Mr King says a government appointed task for undergoing various assessments at the site to come up with the damage cost and to develop a plan for the future of the St. Jude hospital.
“We have opened a number of bank accounts in the name of the Saint Jude's Hospital Restoration Fund The Friends of Saint Jude are also managing an account to mobilise and raise resources for the hospital. We believe that once we have a clear indication of the cost for reconstruction, we will be in a position soon after, to announce a date for the reconstruction of this very important facility,” Mr. King indicated.
The Prime Minister says government is using the fire at Saint Jude's Hospital as a learning experience. He says government is presently reviewing its policies regarding safety and insurance of all government institutions, particularly health facilities.
“The Saint Jude's experience is one that our health and planning policy makers will utilise as a model for future developmental plans for national institutions,” said the prime minister.
In making the two hundred and fifty thousand dollar donation, LUCELEC`s Managing Director Trevor Louisy indicated that the gesture is in keeping with the company's corporate and social responsibility to the people of Saint Lucia.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), headed by Director Gena Watson is presently assisting government with the restoration of the hospital located in Vieux Fort. |
