Tuesday, October 20, 2009  –  Saint Lucia's renowned artiste and educator, Honourable Dunstan St. Omer, will now be referred to as the Honourable Dr. Dunstan St. Omer.

He was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies at UWI`s inaugural Open Campus Graduation on Saturday September 17.

Known as the Caribbean’s leading muralist, St. Omer credits his success to his relationship with God and the support of many people including his family.

“I thank God for this magnificent honour that is been bestowed on me today. I would also like to dedicate this moment to my mother, father and my grandmother whose love made me, and shaped my life,”Dr. St. Omer added.

Dr. St. Omer, whose work is chronicled throughout the length and breadth of the Caribbean, received the award for his contribution towards the development of the visual arts.

He articulated his honour to be awarded by a prestigious institution like the University of the West Indies.

“To be honoured by my people at the highest intellectual level in the Caribbean, is the realisation of a dream that no matter how small a nation, it cannot survive without a university of some kind. It is fitting, therefore,  that we are holding the first graduation of the University of the West Indies Open Campus here in Saint Lucia.”

Honourable Dr. Dunstan St. Omer is credited with designing the national flag of Saint Lucia in 1967.

In 2007, he was acclaimed a national cultural hero by the Jubilee Trust Fund in collaboration with the Folk Research Centre, and the Cultural Development Foundation.
