Monday,  November 30, 2009  The Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Embassy of Cuba have officially open the doors to the Cuban Eye Centre of Excellence in Saint Lucia.

Minister of Health and Wellness Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir says Saint Lucia can now boast of yet another modern income generating medical facility.

The Cuban Eye Centre of Excellence, he says, will cater to the needs of not only Saint Lucians, but to other regional nationals who travelled to Cuba for treatment.

“We have  state-of-the art equipment. We also want this Eye Centre to be a centre of excellence for the OECS and beyond. This is what my government   and the people of Cuba would like to have,” the health minister said.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King, Home Affairs Minister Senator the Honourable Guy Mayers, called on ministry of health officials and medical personnel at the clinic to continue advocating for timely eye care and health intervention, to avoid or delay the progression of eye diseases such as glaucoma and cataract.

“The inauguration of the Eye Centre of Excellence is very timely. It has come on stream at a time when several Saint Lucians have been sensitized and have been made aware of eye care treatment at the earliest opportunity. The Centre must endeavour to sell and advertise its services to the public through a series of educational campaigns at a cost structure that will be affordable,” Mayers said.

The Cuban Eye Centre of Excellence was formally opened at the Victoria Hospital last week Friday. It is staffed by over seventeen highly qualified Cuban eye care professionals.
