Friday, November 6, 2009 – The Saint Lucia Government remains steadfast in its determination to rebuild and re-establish St. Jude Hospital, as a premier medical facility, serving not only Saint Lucia but the rest of the southern Caribbean.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King made the announcement during the launch of the St. Jude Hospital Reconstruction Raffle last week, saying that the hospital is in a strategic location to provide services to regional neighbours.

“A study is now being undertaken to determine what range of specialized services are available in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados or in any of the southern Caribbean islands; and then to focus our attention on providing the services that are not presently provided in the southern Caribbean, so that St. Jude Hospital can emerge as a regional centre of excellence in whatever area we decide to venture in.”

Prime Minister King said the island's recent loss has provided an opportunity for St. Lucia to be known for its world class medical services and infrastructure.

Once completed, the St. Jude Hospital will be similar in infrastructural and service delivery status, to the re-conceptualized National Mental Wellness Hospital, which will be officially handed over to the Government and People of Saint Lucia this week.

“Very soon the revised plan will be presented to the Government and it is my hope, if all goes well and we are satisfied with the new plans for the reconstruction of St. Jude Hospital, we can break ground in December and commence construction of the new St. Jude Hospital in January 2010,” prime minister King said.

The St. Jude Hospital has been in existence since 1966. To date, government has raised in excess of two million dollars for the St. Jude Hospital Rehabilitation Project.
