Thursday, November 5, 2009 – Plans are running full steam ahead for the St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority's hosting of the National Clean-up Activity.
Education and Public Information Manager at the Authority Emlyn Jean, says as indiscriminate littering and refuse disposal continue to plague the island, the national clean-up campaign is aimed at encouraging good waste management practices,. She says over two hundred and fifty groups have thus far registered for the event.
“Groups are expected to engage in the clean-up of schools, roadsides, illegal dumps, recreational areas, ravines, rivers, public beaches, etc. This activity provides those groups within the community with an opportunity to identify issues they may not be able to focus on at other times of the year because of the unavailability of resources.”
The St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority has also embarked on other initiatives, one of which is the “Clean Schools, Healthy Schools Project”, funded by the Bank Of Saint Lucia.
The Project has to date targeted ten schools across the island.
“It will take the form of deployment of bins, environmental awareness, beautification and a number of activities that really come from the teachers and school principals, to improve waste management at the schools,” Jean said.
The national clean-up activity will take place this weekend, November 6 to 8, and will be held under the theme, “ Nurture Nature for a better Future; Stop The Littering!” |
