Thursday, November 19, 2009  Minister for Physical Development, Housing, Urban  Renewal, Local Government and the Environment,  Honourable Richard Frederick,  says government will continue pursuing various options to make Saint Lucia an energy efficient society.

Minister Frederick reiterated government's commitment to energy efficiency in an official address to commemorate Energy Awareness week, which begins on Sunday and end on November 28.

This year's observance is being held under the theme “Combating Climate Change through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency”.

“This government will continue to pursue all avenues possible, along with the help of our international partners such as the Organisation of American States (OAS), in order to advance the development of our geothermal resources. We will also continue to persevere in the development of a wind park. Although we may not become a sustainable energy demonstration country by 2010, it is our hope that we will not fall  far behind in achieving this millstone,” Frederick said.

Minister Frederick says the soon to be finalised National Energy Policy will further articulate government's commitment to promoting the use of renewable energy technologies at the political level.

However, Mr. Frederick is also urging all citizens to pursue energy efficient measures in their homes.

“We are a creative, resilient and resourceful people,” Frederick said.  “We can achieve our goal of making our country a leader in sustainable energy. All we need to do is to dare to dream, to have the courage to believe in ourselves,  work together and we will succeed. Let this year's Energy Awareness Week serve as an inspiration and spur you to play your part in securing Saint Lucia's energy future.”

Minister Frederick is encouraging citizens to look out for an Energy Awareness Week Supplement which will be featured in local newspapers.
