Tuesday, November 24, 2009 – The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF),
is in the process of wrapping up logistics for this weekend’s hosting of a
special arts festival, to launch the re-establishment of an annual national arts
awards and national arts festival in 2010.
Executive Director of the CDF, Kennedy Samuel, says the Annual National Arts
Awards and National Arts Festival will be used as a medium to stimulate the
rejuvenation of the arts. He says since the ban of the M&C fine arts awards, the
CDF has been attempting to establish an event to encapsulate the various art
forms in Saint Lucia. “There is a lot of demand the rebirth of such a
festival. Artistes are saying there are no incentives and we have taken the
decision to re-establish the national arts awards—re-establish an authentic and
credible national arts awards that we hope will continue and be sustained for
many years and will be an incentive for the production of art in any one year,”
Samuel said.
Mr. Samuel says from November 28, to December 6, the CDF grounds will be
transformed into a mini cultural village. The festival will involve artistes
from different genres. “This festival will be a platform for showcasing work
that has been done throughout 2009. Of course it will also be an opportunity to
give the public information about our plans for 2010 including the
re-establishment of the national arts awards and national arts festival.”
Among the activities will be a visual arts exhibition, book fair, and drama. The
festival will end with the annual festival of carols scheduled to take place on
Sunday December 6 at the Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Dennery from 6:30 pm.
