Monday, May 11, 2009 – As the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) prepares to deepen its integration movement, member states are focused on developing a sound communication strategy.
The OECS Secretariat recently hosted a workshop for spokespersons at the Bay Gardens Hotel. Elma Gene Isaac, Head of the Regional Integration Unit said effective communication is necessary for a successful economic union.
“So what we have decided to do in the Regional Integration Unit, as part of our programme of work, is to develop a cadre of persons throughout the OECS who are capable of communicating the message of OECS Economic Union and integration more generally,” said Isaac.
She said the process has to be continued over a period of time. While developing the messages now, Isaac continued, the secretariat will also be engaging OECS nationals throughout the evolution of Economic Union arrangements.
“As secretariat staff we have to provide technical backstopping to national efforts, and we also have the regional agenda. We must have two types of competencies—the technical competence we know it’s already there, that’s indisputable, but what we’re not too sure of is the communication competence. So we intend to tackle that,” said Isaac.
The communications training has started in Saint Lucia and will next move to Dominica. Another focus of the workshop in developing communication capacity, is the training of persons who will in turn become trainers of prospective spokespersons of the OECS Economic Union. |
