Thursday, May 14, 2009 – With just about six weeks away from Lucian Carnival 2009, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), the main body responsible for organizing the event, will be hosting a Carnival Arts Workshop from May 15th -17th at the CDF's conference room.
The workshop will be facilitated under a Trinidad National Carnival Commission facilitated cultural accord signed in 1998, between the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Government of Saint Lucia.
One of the objectives of the workshop, according to Cultural Development Officer with the CDF Gandolph St. Clair, is to increase the current pool of judges for all aspects of carnival.
“We are very static in terms of our numbers, and our expertise needs to be fine tuned. Carnival is growing at the community and national level, and with new shows coming in, we need a pool of judges to go through the different stages,” St. Clair said in a GIS interview. “The Carnival Arts Workshop will be conducted by former Calypso Monarch, Morel Peters aka 'Luta' and acclaimed mas designer and 'King of the Band' Geraldo Vieira Jr., who will impart their knowledge and skill on the judging of calypso and mas.”
Under the same cultural accord, a traditional mas workshop is scheduled for the 22nd-24th of May, at the CDF's conference room. Joan Richardson will deal with the tradition mass aspect, pianist Richard Forteau, will delve into the judging of pan, while Geraldo Vieira Jr. will do a hands-on session on costume building and design. |
