Tuesday, May 19, 2009 – Residents of the district of Babonneau are taking steps to secure their community’s development as their own responsibility. The Babonneau District Council, comprising residents of the community, was sworn-in on the weekend.
Chairman of the council, Paul Edgar expressed his intention to engage the entire community in a process of mobilization.
“In ensuring that the council’s agenda is in keeping with the needs of the community, all efforts will be made to get the views of residents. In this regard, the Council will encourage the creation of active community groups where there are none, and assist to strengthen where there are groups which require support,” Mr. Edgar said.
Parliamentary Representative for Babonneau, Honourable Ezechiel Joseph said councillors have been chosen based on recommendations from residents and previous experience in various areas.
The Babonneau MP said the work of the Council will change the landscape in the electoral district. However, he cautioned councillors to maintain honour in the process.
“I’d like you to promise me that in changing tomorrow, and in opening up doors, you do it without favour; you do it with an all embracing approach. And if I’m not clear, I want you to promise me that you will leave politics out of the Council,” said Mr. Joseph.
For too long, Mr. Joseph said, politics have divided the community that he remembers as being very close-knit in his younger days.
The Babonneau MP says the Council will be responsible for instituting various community projects and programmes, aimed at fostering community spirit and providing positive reinforcement to residents of the district. |
