Monday, March 16, 2009 – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has constituted a Working Group for the purpose of raising awareness and to conduct research and fact-finding consultations in Saint Lucia, on the establishment of a regional framework for the protection of traditional knowledge (TK), traditional cultural expressions (folklore) and genetic resources.
The consultations are based on a resolution adopted in 2006, during a WIPO Ministerial Level Meeting for the Caribbean Countries relating to the establishment of a Caribbean Framework for the Protection of Traditional Knowledge, Folklore and Genetic Resources. A regional expert meeting on the subject was subsequently held in Kingston, Jamaica in March 2008, where further discussions were held to examine the possibilities of establishing the framework.
The meetings in Saint Lucia will be targeted at government officials, indigenous and local communities and other cultural and ethnic communities, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), regional organizations and other private and public stakeholders (such as cultural institutions and user communities).
The Registry of Companies & Intellectual Property (ROCIP) under the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Chambers, therefore is spearheading the activity, scheduled for Monday, March 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Conference Room of the Bay Gardens Hotel at Rodney Bay, Gros Islet. |
