Tuesday, March 10, 2009 – Government, via the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, has taken meaningful steps to enhance the livelihood of the fishers of Anse-La-Raye through the construction of a new fisheries complex and jetty.
The mainstay of the village is primarily fishing and so the village, during the ensuing project, is expected to receive a timely economic boost from the multi-million dollar initiative, financed with assistance from the government of Japan.
Member of Parliament for Anse-La-Raye, Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir, welcomed the initiative, stating that the plans had long been in the pipeline. The parliamentary representative said the fishers are pleased that their livelihood is being preserved.
“I say to the people of Anse-La-Raye, we have to be very thankful to the government of Japan for the fisheries complex. This will not only result in the fishing complex being established in Anse-La-Raye, but for a period of time, it will improve the economic viability of the community. It will provide jobs for some men and women in Anse-La-Raye and beyond,” said Dr. Mondesir.
Japanese representative Mr. Kiyoshi Takeuchi expressed the commitment of the government of Japan to Saint Lucia, noting that Japan's involvement in the fisheries sector on the island has been a long standing and successful one.
“This agreement provides a grant of $ 536-million yen; the current equivalent of US$5 ,485,059 for the construction of a new jetty, new fishing gear and new fisheries complex. This project is expected to assist fishers in Anse-La-Raye as well as tourists, who visit the scenic village” the Japanese representative said.
The village is well known for the hosting of the Anse-La-Raye Fish Fry, a weekend tourist attraction featuring a variety of fish cuisine, in a street party atmosphere.
The ground breaking ceremony for the improvement of the Anse-La-Raye Fishery Infrastructure Project took place on March 6th, 2009. |
