Thursday, June 25, 2009 – The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation will this Friday introduce a new programme to encourage more interest among students in the tourism sector. TEAM, which stands for Tourism Education and Me, will help emphasize the subject of tourism within grade four classrooms and over time be introduced to other grades.
Tourism Officer with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation Sherille Emmanuel-John, says if the industry is to remain sustainable, the future workforce must develop an intimate appreciation for, and knowledge of the industry.
“What we notice is that as the industry grows, we require new skills, and if we try to enhance linkages with other sectors of the economy, we figure out that it is necessary to engage students, because they are the people of tomorrow. So we have to engage them from an early stage in their lives and get that interest inculcated from a young age,” said the tourism officer.
The programme will begin with District Six and Seven located in the south of island, and will include training sessions with education officials using the module from the Caribbean Tourism Organization for Teaching Tourism in Primary Schools.
“We are going to hold workshops for District Education Officers (DEO's), principals and teachers from District Six and Seven which will introduce them to the TEAM programme. We will have officials from various tourism sectors, who will present an overview of the tourism industry. These officials will represent the Saint Lucia Tourist Board, the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, the Southern Tourism Association, and officials of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation,” she said.
The exercise will come off at the Coconut Bay Resort. |
