Tuesday, June 16, 2009 – The Ministry of Health has thrown its support behind a programme designed to strengthen and expand voluntary blood donor programmes in collaboration with local national campaigns. Saint Lucia joined the rest of the world on Sunday, June 14th, in recognizing World Blood Donor Day.
The observance is held annually in an effort to create wider awareness of the need for safe blood for transfusion and the importance of blood donation. Minister for Health, Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir paid tribute to blood donors in Saint Lucia, in an address to mark the occasion.
“There is a growing appreciation for the vital role of selfless Saint Lucians who donate blood on a regular basis to save lives and improve the health of people who in some cases are unknown to them. As a country, we must focus on innovative approaches to inspire community participation, youth involvement and develop national blood donor programmes aimed at achieving one hundred percent voluntary blood donors,” said Dr. Mondesir, who is also Minister for Wellness, Human Services, Family Affairs, Gender Relations and National Mobilisation. |
