Monday, June 15, 2009 – The Sandals resort chain is being commended by local government officials for its community outreach efforts.
The programme—a norm for the regional chain—was pioneered locally by the Sandals Grande Resort and Spa, and promises to continue annually. Fourteen participants of the community of Gros-Islet were enrolled in a two month food and beverage training programme under complete sponsorship from the resort.
Parliamentary representative for Gros- Islet, Honourable Lenard Montoute said making reference to the unusual spate of murders that occurred on island recently, said: “I believe to a certain extent, especially when it comes to the gang wars and so on, these are activities perpetrated by young people who are hopeless; young people who feel that they do not have an opportunity, and young people who feel that society has failed them. You were given a golden opportunity, because as young people, the best asset you can have is education and training.”
Hospitality and personal attitudes is what sets Saint Lucia apart as a tourist destination, Montoute said, because other destinations possess the same or similar amenities.
As such, he commended participants for their drive thus far, and urged them to continue on a positive path.
“I just want to say to you that the true success of this programme lies in the extent to which you go out there and utilize the training and skills that you have gathered over the last two months and the extent to which you move on in life using this training as a stepping stone. Your opportunities are limitless right now, this is just a launching pad for you.”
Montoute commended Sandals Resorts for being a good corporate citizen, assuring that their investment in human resources and the youth is justified and will reap great benefits for all involved. |
