Wednesday, June 17, 2009The constituency of Dennery North now has a District Council to see over the affairs of the constituency.  Nine councillors were sworn in on Sunday June 14, at the La Ressource Combined School.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister for Local Government, Hon. Richard Frederick, urged members of Town and Village Councils around the island to take control of all government assets in their areas, to ensure that the assets are protected and are of maximum benefit to all residents. He also called on the councillors to operate with transparency and accountability at all times.

“Nothing should be left out of your reach, everything owned by government should be controlled by you, and if any member of central government wants anything done within your jurisdiction there should be collaboration. Do whatever you do above board. If something is going to cost $4000 to do, do not pay $10,000 to get that $4000 job done because when the auditors come back, you will be called to account,” said Minister Frederick.

The local government authority will be responsible for the facilitation and implementation of various capital projects in the area and the upkeep of infrastructure like drains.

Chairperson of the Dennery North District Council Ferdinand Stanislaus says the goals of the Council can only be realised when constituents work together in the interest of their community development.

“We need everyone in our community to work with us, to plan with us, to discuss with us, and to decide with us; that is why we have agreed to have meetings with all the existing organisations in the valley,” Stanislaus said.

Parliamentary Representative Marcus Nicholas expressed optimism that the council will operate in a manner that benefits all constituents. The inauguration and swearing in of the Dennery North District Councillors was held under the theme “Together we can achieve development”.
