Tuesday, July 7, 2009 – The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) is aiming to build on the successes of recent carnival as it prepares for an onslaught of carnival shows this weekend.
Fresh on the heals of a record groovy Monarch show, the CDF is preparing for the much talked about Calypso Monarch Semi-Finals on Friday night at the Phoenix Night Club in Vieux-Fort.
The CDF's Executive Director Mr. Kennedy Samuel says calypso lovers and other patrons will be treated to a special show, held for the first time in the south of the island, on Friday.
“We now have our semi-finalists who will do battle on Friday at a new venue in Vieux-Fort, the Phoenix Night Club. The south of the island is buzzing with anticipation for the first ever national calypso activity. Just from the line-up of semi-finalists, you can tell that it's going to be a wonderful show,” Samuel said.
A mixed cast of eighteen veterans and upcoming calypsonians are down to perform at the semi-finals, which is scheduled to begin at 8p.m.
Samuel says despite all the controversy surrounding the show, the CDF will produce a top quality semi-final show.
“We have committed ourselves to producing a very good show in Vieux-Fort because the people in that part of the island have been starved with that level of performing activity. We want to give them a very good treat to ensure that they feel a part of national activities, just like people in the north. I think there is an extra responsibility on the CDF to come good and we guarantee a show of tremendous quality,” said Samuel.
Following the semi-finals, nine calypsonians will be chosen to do battle against reigning Monarch Herb Black on Saturday July 18, at the Mindoo Philip Park. |
