Tuesday, July 7, 2009 – The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association, is looking ahead after a successful observation of Blindness Awareness Month in May.
Executive Director of the Association Mr. Anthony Avril, who singled out the National Assembly of Blind and Vision Impaired Persons, says the observance was deemed successful because the objectives were met.
“The National Assembly of Blind and Vision Impaired People from around the island provided a good point of really assessing what kind of impact the programmes are having on the lives of blind and vision impaired people and where we are in terms of coverage. Notwithstanding, we have a very long way to go due to financial constraints.”
Avril said the Association is grateful for the feedback from persons whom the SLBWA seeks to serve.
“A lot of them felt that they needed to feel more connected to the association. They're receiving services but they want more direct connection and what came out of that is for us to have a network of individuals around the island—based in their respective communities—who will be able to provide that direct link for them.”
Mr. Avril said one of the major constraints confronting the Association is the lack of someone to handle rehabilitation in the southern part of the island.
In his estimation the issue, which the Association has tried to resolve for sometime now, needs urgent attention. |
