Tuesday, July 21, 2009 – The Ministry of Health is urging more Saint Lucians to take advantage of the Miracle Eye Care Programme, which affords citizens free eye check ups.
Media consultant in the Health Ministry, Mr. Edward Bellasse, says although hundreds of Saint Lucians have visited the Cuban ophthalmologist, more citizens should utilise their free services, given the exorbitant costs usually associated with eye care.
Bellasse says after checking with the ophthalmologist, people requiring further treatment will be referred to the Victoria Hospital.
“Basically the programme is to help the underprivileged who are unable to secure medical eye care which is usually at an exorbitant rate. The Ministry of Health in partnership with the Cuban government, has chosen by way of this programme to assist them with their eye care needs. Every week, we go out in different regions and the turnout has been tremendous; for example in any one clinic, you will find more than two hundred people in attendance.”
The Miracle Eye Care Programme was born out of the cordial relationship between the governments and people of Havana and Saint Lucia.
Bellasse says the Cuban eye doctors will be conducting free tests at various locations in Saint Lucia in the coming weeks. |
