Friday, July 3, 2009 – The constituency of Vieux Fort North now has a Local Government Council to oversee the areas development and the improvement of social life for all residents.  The seven member district council was sworn in on Sunday at a special inauguration ceremony in La Retraite, Grace, Vieux -Fort.

Speaking at the Inauguration Ceremony, Director of Local Government in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Lucian Isidore, said the establishment of the local government authority in Vieux-Fort North is in keeping with government's plan for the holistic development of Saint Lucia.  He also urged the seven counsellors to operation transparency and accountability.

“There is an operational budget to make your life easier. There is also a subvention to conduct various works in you area and there are staff that you can employ in the area to ensure that you stint as counsellors is successful.”

Mr. Isidore said Vieux-Fort is one of the constituencies which has not really benefited from state intervention over the years.  He said the inauguration of the local government authority in the area will assist with the shifting of the tides in that regard.

“The fact that we are establishing a local government authority in Vieux-Forth North is providing an opportunity to make right the things that are wrong. I believe that the Council's first responsibility is to have confidence in the residents' ability and capacity to mobilise themselves towards improving their way of life and making things better for all constituents,” Mr. Isidore said.

The members of the local government authority are Marylene Paul, Janie Fontenelle, Charles St. Aimee, Rufus George, Vincent Charlery, Winston Bastien and Edward Bellas.
