Monday, July 27, 2009 The newly re-located Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services will operate from its temporary location on upper Manoel Street, Castries until its permanent headquarters is constructed.
Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Honourable Guy Mayers says a site has already been earmarked for the permanent headquarters of the Saint Lucia Fire Service and a sod turning ceremony should take place in the short to medium term.
The minister has nonetheless indicated his pleasure that the once disjointed units of the Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services can now re-group and operate in one physical space.
Im pleased that we have able to temporarily relocate, but I recognise that we are still not at a hundred percent at ease. But as the fire chief said, he made the call to move into the facility so that we can now have all the branches of the Fire Service that were scattered after the earthquake in one location.
Fire Chief Leslie Fontenelle said the unit has been displaced for almost two years since the November 2007earthquake, and so welcomed better working conditions.
However, Mr. Fontenelle will not rest until the keys to the official headquarters are handed over.
The reason is we are still on borrowed premises. When the Fire Service has a structure which can truly be representative of the Saint Lucia Fire Service Headquarters, then I believe at that time, we'll have much to celebrate and much to shout about.
The official opening of the Saint Lucia Fire and Emergency Services took place on Monday morning at the new premises on Manoel Street. |
