Friday, July 31, 2009 – The Folk Research Centre (FRC) concluded its series of Saint Lucia Studies Emancipation Lectures on Friday with lectures in Micoud, Choiseul and Augier in Vieux Fort. Lecturer Laurent Jn Pierre spoke on the topic of “Rediscovering the role of Provision Grounds in the Quest for Socio Economic Empowerment during pre and Post Emancipation in the Caribbean island”.
Mr Jn. Pierre says there are a lot of agricultural traditions which were used during the slavery period like the kitchen garden, which can still be used today to ensure food security. The lectures, which were held at various locations around the island, replaced the annual Saint Lucia Studies Conference which could not have been held this year.
The Executive Director of the Folk Research Kentry Jn .Pierre says the aim is to raise awareness on the impact of slavery on Caribbean life and survival, while at the same time celebrating the importance of Emancipation Day.
“It is our hope that as people engage in discussion and debate on the various issues that are arise from these lectures they will find another kind of emancipation -the mind emancipation. And we are hoping that this would help them negotiate in the period ahead, so that they could actively engage in nation building and the development of their communities and themselves,” the FRC Executive Director said.
The Saint Lucia Studies Emancipation Lectures 2009 were hosted in collaboration with the Cultural development Foundation. |
