Wednesday, January 14, 2009 – The local organising committee preparing for the annual CARIFTA games scheduled to be held here during Easter said it is committed to hosting a successful event.

Committee Chairman, Donovan Williams gave an update on preparations for the games during a function put on by the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee recently. He said the organisers have had a number of challenges in terms of the financing of additional infrastructural works at the George Odlum stadium.

“Thankfully, we’ve been able to convince the powers that be that this is an important national activity that requires the level of funding support that we have deemed necessary, and so we are now in a position where we can actually contract those works,” Mr William said.

He also announced that there are six different packages associated with works at the stadium and stated that the Committee will be in a position to offer contracts by the end of January.

“All of these packages are of four-to-six week duration which gives us sufficient time to assure they are done before the end of March. The other advantage for us is that they all can be done simultaneously which will result in minimum delays, William noted.

Hosting the CARIFTA games will cost Saint Lucia approximately 10 Million EC dollars, seven million of which will go entirely towards infrastructural works at the stadium.
