Thursday, January 29, 2009 – The Ministry of Education has expressed its
intention to establish the “Awards of Excellence” as an annual highlight on its
calendar. The national awards which recognizes students for academic excellence
and recognizes long-serving educators, took place at the National Cultural
Centre on January 22, as part of the Nobel Laureate Week Programme.
Minister for Education Honourable Arsene James, also recognized the dedication
of teachers who toil behind the scenes to inspire students to strive for
excellence.
“I want to congratulate all the attendees; I must say you’ve made us proud. I
also want to commend the teachers and the principals who played a part in
ensuring that the students achieved excellence.”
The minister gave his assurance that the challenges confronted in funding the
event will not dampen the ministry’s will to host the beneficial activity.
“We hope hope that next year we will have many more awardees. The event is
costly, but we will do all within our power to ensure that when our students
achieve excellence, they will be honoured by organizing for them such a
prestigious activity.”
Students were awarded for outstanding performances in various categories. The
ministry also recognized 46 teachers for long service.
